ELECT STRONG LEADERSHIP

Dream Big. Fight Hard.

Four words that embody my own life experience. Born and raised in India, from a young age I was unafraid to challenge the status quo and fight for what is right. Growing up in a repressive society, I had no choice but to speak up if I wanted a college education or career. Moving to New Jersey to attend college, I faced challenges both as an immigrant and a woman of color. I continued to use my voice as a young professional, to call out unfair practices; and as a mother, to advocate for children. I learned to hold my ground and fight for all who did not have a voice.

After my daughters left for college, I followed my passion to see more women elected to office. After working on local, state, and federal campaigns; I became a candidate myself and ran for Borough Council. During that election I learned that the position I was running for was listed as Councilman on the ballot. I worked to get the language changed to Member of Council in my county and got legislation introduced in the State Legislature to mandate gender-neutral ballots statewide.

I am a strong leader with a proven record of decades of service in leadership roles at multiple non-profits and advocacy organizations. Within NOW, I spearheaded the revival of my local chapter which was dormant. Before I became President, NOW New Jersey was largely on the sidelines of politics and policy in the state. Because of my leadership and persistence, in less than two years, NOW has regained a seat at the table of power and influence. We have used our organizational voice to call out the toxic culture that exists within New Jersey politics and the barriers it presents for women. At the same time, I have built relationships with legislators, the Governor’s office and advocacy groups. We are currently working on bills to codify Roe v Wade, improve access to abortion care for all New Jerseyans and provide free menstrual products in public schools. I fought to change the bill’s language from “feminine hygiene products” to “menstrual products” making it trans-inclusive.

A lifetime member of NOW, I currently serve on the National Global Feminist Committee and the Racial Justice Task Force. I am chair of the Democratic Party in my town and County Director for the South Asian American Caucus of the state party. Representation is important to me, and as a member of the Union County Advisory Board on the Status of Minorities, I am working to ensure that all persons in my county are counted in the census.

This November's election is going to define who we are as a country.  The AAPI vote may be the difference in flipping the Senate and the White House. I am working on the National Communications Teams of South Asians for Biden and Indians for Biden to turn out the vote in battleground states.

If elected, I will work to lift the voices of color in our organization. For too long we have been unable to attract persons of color and young feminists and I will work to grow our organization through better communication, and sharing of knowledge and best practices with our chapter leaders. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize and unite in the fight for equality. I ask for your support.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Lobbied to get bills passed like the landmark Environmental Justice legislation that establishes New Jersey as a leader in the field

  • Key member of Thrive NJ coalition working on abortion access and sex-ed legislation

  • Founded Equality, Period. coalition to pass Menstrual Equity legislation in NJ

  • Created a stipend internship program for high school/college students

  • Addressed the generation gap among activists with a unique InterGenerational oral HERstory project than led to 5 creative pieces documenting NOW-NJ pioneers

  • Created a structure for the NOW NJ PAC that was used as a model for states by NOW PAC staff

  • Leveraged my technology background to modernize the operations of NOW New Jersey including a complete revamp of the website and monthly newsletter

  • Testified before Senate Majority leader’s committee on the toxic environment for women in New Jersey politics to call out the additional barriers faced by women of color

  • Recruited a NOW New Jersey board that is the most diverse it has ever been – 50% POC, 50% young feminists, LGBTQ representation

ON NOW BOARD, I WILL...

  • Leverage my technology background to reinstate technology committee and address issues such as database cleanup
needed at National Action Center (NAC).

  • Call for transparency in decisions that are made at the Board and Officer levels.

  • Ensure that the Board does their due diligence in their capacity as overseers of National NOW.

  • Push for better communication between NAC and chapters as well as between the Board and State/Chapter leaders.

  • Advocate for more paid staff positions at National and State levels. Get states off the ground with initial funding to promote Equity in leadership positions - else we will continue to ONLY see leaders who come from privilege.

  • Work towards true diversity and inclusion within the entire organization. Diversity measured in numbers is meaningless. WE NEED TO STRIVE FOR INCLUSION by creating psychologically safe environments where all voices are represented, welcomed, and heard.

  • Create a two way dialogue with members and leaders in my district to ensure that I AM TRULY REPRESENTING YOU!

What I value most about Anjali is her willingness to roll up her sleeves and do the hard work in the trenches with you, unwilling to ask of you, anything she is not already doing herself. Anjali always has my back and supports my chapter’s efforts without fail. It is my privilege to work with Anjali and I know that she will make unique and extremely valuable contributions to the National NOW Board.
